In 2025, your energy bill will undergo some changes. These adjustments are due to updates in taxes, grid management costs, and other government-imposed charges. Curious about what this means for your wallet? We’ll explain it all in this article!
In short:
- Energy tax on electricity and gas will decrease slightly
- Tax credit will increase
- Grid management costs will rise
- The netting arrangement will stay the same
Energy tax on electricity and gas will decrease slightly
Good news! In 2025, the energy tax on electricity and gas will drop a little.
The energy tax on electricity will decrease by €0.0088 to €0.1228 per kWh. This means you’ll pay less for your electricity usage. For an average consumption of 2,500 kWh per year, you’ll save around €22.
The energy tax on gas will drop by €0.0058 to €0.6996 per m³. For an average gas consumption of 1,200 m³ per year, this means a saving of about €7.
Tax credit will increase
Part of your energy usage is considered a basic necessity, so you don’t pay energy tax on it. Homeowners with a residential function (like a house) are entitled to an energy tax reduction for their electricity connection.
The tax credit, or the tax reduction on your energy bill, will increase slightly. In 2025, you’ll receive a discount of €635.19 (including VAT) on your energy costs. That’s an increase of €3.80 compared to 2024. Not a big change, but every little bit helps!
Grid management costs will rise
Unfortunately, there’s some bad news too. The costs you pay to your grid operator, known as grid management costs, will increase significantly by about 11% in 2025. For an average household, this means an increase of approximately €60 per year (including VAT).
The type of connection you have determines how much you’ll pay in grid management costs. This varies per grid operator. You can find your type of connection and grid operator at Mijnaansluiting.nl.
Why are grid management costs increasing?
Grid management costs cover the transport of electricity and gas to your home. Grid operators use this money to install new pipelines and cables. There’s an increasing demand for electricity, and the current energy grid can’t keep up with it.
The netting arrangement will stay the same
The netting arrangement, which allows you to offset the electricity you feed back into the grid against your usage, will be abolished starting January 1, 2027. That said, you can already maximize the use of your generated power by running appliances when the sun is shining.
